South West News
Keeping you in the loop whilst protecting your business from HSE enforcements in the South West.
Formal Improvement Notice
In October 2025, a pallet manufacturing company located in Tavistock, Devon, was issued an Improvement Notice by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
The notice resulted from the company's failure to implement proper hearing health surveillance for its employees who worked in high-noise areas of the facility.
Once HSE has its foot in the door, it’s hard to get them out again.
Enforcement
In 2023, HSE inspected a plastics manufacturer in Gloucester and found the company had failed to place noise-exposed employees under appropriate health surveillance. A formal Improvement Notice was served.
This is how most HSE enforcement starts: not with a headline fine, but with an inspector walking the floor, checking your records, and finding gaps you didn't know existed.
Once HSE have their foot in the door, it's hard to get them out again.

"Doing our annual hearing tests this way saved quite a lot of money this year. I scheduled the tests one month in advance, but one of the guys was sick on the day.
I still had the headset when he came back to work and got the job done with minimum fuss and no extra cost. Highly recommended."

FAQ Section
Industrial Hearing Tests in the South West of England
Any employer in the South West with workers exposed to noise at or above 85 dB(A) must provide hearing health surveillance under the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005. In this region, that typically includes aerospace component manufacturing around Bristol and Filton, food and drink production across Somerset and Devon, woodworking and joinery operations, and quarrying and aggregate processing. The law applies UK-wide regardless of region, but these are the South West industries where noise exposure is most common.
Equipment sent on-site, no need for an audiologist to visit.
No, and that is the point. Traditional mobile audiometry services charge day rates of £1,000 to £1,700 because they send a van and a technician. Hear 4 The Long Term removes that cost entirely. You receive a pre-calibrated headset, your nominated person runs the test, and every result is reviewed by Mark Ashmore, an HCPC-registered audiologist with over 30 years' experience.
Hear 4 The Long Term are the cheapest in the United Kingdom
HSE hearing surveillance starts from £10 per test. Earplug fit testing starts from £3 per test. Baseline hearing tests for new starters start from £9 per test. These prices are the same nationwide, with no regional surcharges, travel fees, or minimum bookings. Traditional mobile van providers serving the South West often add travel charges to their day rates, particularly for sites outside Bristol. Use the Compliance Checker for an exact quote based on your workforce size.
Night shift doesn't have to come back in during the daytime for hearing tests!
Yes. The headset is lightweight and portable, so you can courier it between sites or have each location take turns. This is particularly useful for South West employers with operations spread across Bristol, Somerset, and Devon. Each site can test workers on any shift, including nights and weekends, without scheduling separate van visits for each location.
The evidence is in the steps you take to mitigate the risk.
Yes. In August 2024, HSE inspected a workshop in Avonmouth, Bristol and found employees exposed above 80 dB with no noise risk assessment and no hearing surveillance in place. A formal Improvement Notice was served. In October 2025, a pallet manufacturer in Tavistock, Devon was served an Improvement Notice for failing to ensure employees in high-noise areas were under hearing health surveillance. HSE’s 2024/25 Dust and Noise campaign found that 75% of noisy workplaces failed basic compliance nationally.
