Workplace Hearing Tests in the East Midlands.

HSE hearing health surveillance for employers across Nottingham, Derby, Leicester, Mansfield and Northampton.

The East Midlands has a strong base of food manufacturing, pharmaceutical production, and general engineering. Many sites operate machinery producing noise above the upper exposure action level, meaning employers are legally required to arrange hearing tests for exposed workers.

Each of these sectors carries noise exposure risks that trigger mandatory hearing health surveillance under the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005.

Formal Improvement Notice

In April 2025, a timber systems manufacturer in Coalville, Leicestershire, was served with an Improvement Notice for failing to ensure that hearing protection was properly used by employees exposed to noise levels above 85 dB.

"Doing our annual hearing tests this way saved quite a lot of money this year. I scheduled the tests one month in advance, but one of the guys was sick on the day.

I still had the headset when he came back to work and got the job done with minimum fuss and no extra cost. Highly recommended."

FAQ Section

  • Surprisingly, a lot more than you'd think

Any employer with workers exposed to noise at or above 85 dB(A) must provide hearing health surveillance under the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005. In the East Midlands, this commonly applies to food manufacturing and packaging, pharmaceutical production, general engineering and machining, textiles, and timber processing. The requirement is UK-wide, but these are the industries across Nottingham, Derby, Leicester, and Northampton where noise exposure is most prevalent.

  • Equipment sent on-site, no need for an audiologist to visit.

No. Traditional mobile audiometry services charge day rates of £1,000 to £1,700 because they send a van and a technician. Hear 4 The Long Term sends a pre-calibrated headset instead. Your nominated person runs the test, and every result is reviewed by Mark Ashmore, an HCPC-registered audiologist with over 30 years’ experience. For East Midlands food manufacturers running seasonal production spikes, this means you can test temporary workers at induction without booking a van weeks in advance.

  • Hear 4 The Long Term are the cheapest in the United Kingdom

HSE hearing surveillance starts from £10 per test. Earplug fit testing starts from £3 per test. Baseline hearing tests for new starters start from £9 per test. These prices are the same nationwide, with no regional surcharges, travel fees, or minimum bookings. Use the Compliance Checker for an exact quote based on your workforce size.

  • Night shift doesn't have to come back in during the daytime for hearing tests!

Yes, and you are legally required to if they will be exposed to noise above 85 dB(A). The HSE expects baseline hearing tests before noise exposure begins, which makes induction the ideal time. The H4TLT system takes around 10 minutes per test and can be built into your standard onboarding process. This is particularly relevant for East Midlands food manufacturers and distribution centres that bring on seasonal or agency staff at short notice.

  • The evidence is in the steps you take to mitigate the risk.

Yes. In April 2025, Harlow Timber Systems in Coalville, Leicestershire, was served an Improvement Notice for failing to ensure hearing protection was properly used above 85 dB. In May 2024, Hamilton Adhesive Labels, also in Coalville, received an Improvement Notice for failing to conduct hearing health surveillance despite workers exceeding the upper noise action value. In January 2025, Graham Holmes Astraseal in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, was served a notice for failing to conduct a noise risk assessment. All three were required to comply within months.
