1.2.2 Upper Exposure Action Value (UEAV)

Primary Legislation

  • Daily or weekly personal noise exposure of 85 dB(A)
  • Peak sound pressure of 137 dB(C)
  • Reduce exposure by implementing a programme of organisational and technical measures (Regulation 6(2))
  • Provide hearing protection (mandatory) (Regulation 7(2))
  • Designate Hearing Protection Zones (Regulation 7(3))
  • Daily or weekly personal noise exposure of

    85 dB(A)

  • Peak sound pressure of

    137 dB(C)

  • Reduce exposure by implementing a programme of organisational and technical measures (Regulation 6(2))

  • Provide hearing protection (mandatory) (Regulation 7(2))

  • Designate Hearing Protection Zones (Regulation 7(3))

  • Ensure hearing protection is worn in designated zones (Regulation 7(3))

Why it matters: The UEAV is the point at which hearing protection becomes mandatory and employers must actively reduce noise through engineering and organisational controls. This is where fit testing becomes critical to verify that the mandatory hearing protection is actually providing adequate protection.
